A big-rig ran a red light on Monday, causing a multi-vehicle collision in San Clemente. The accident happened at about 11 a.m. on the off-ramp of the southbound I-5 Freeway at Avenida Pico.
The big-rig driver, 61-year-old Gerald Pesicka of Frazee, Montana, blew through a red light at the end of the off-ramp. The big-rig slammed into a Volvo SUV and a BMW at the intersection, and pushed them into another big-rig.
The Volvo's driver, 25-year-old Kiley Jones, and passenger, 23-year-old Kevyn Menges, both from San Clemente, sustained critical injuries. Firefighters had to extricate the women from the vehicle using the jaws of life. Both women remain hospitalized at Mission Viejo.
An occupant of the BMW was also injured and transported to a local hospital.
