A car carrying three Marines crashed into a tree Tuesday morning in Dana Point, killing the three Marines.
The accident happened about 2:05 a.m. A Dodge Stratus, with four occupants, all in their early 20's, was northbound on Golden Lantern St. The three passengers in the car were Marines. The driver slammed into a tree near Terra Vista. First responders pronounced two of the Marines dead at the scene. The third Marine died at a local hospital.
The driver of the Stratus is in critical condition at Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo.
According to Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority, two of the four men had to be extricated from the mangled wreckage with the jaws of life.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation. It is unknown at this time whether alcohol, drugs or street racing played a part in the crash.
