On Thursday, a Huntington Beach resident was sentenced to 180 days in jail for killing a bicyclist with his vehicle, then fleeing the scene.

The accident happened on May 15, 2011 just before 3 a.m. Driver Adam Garrett, 19-years-old, was exiting the 405 freeway at Warner Ave. He was driving a Toyota Camry. Garrett slammed into the back of a bicycle being ridden by 25-year-old Hung Khac Do.

Garrett fled the scene without rendering aid. About 30 minutes later, Garrett called 911 and reported seeing a body in lanes of traffic. He denied being the driver. Garrett was arrested after police observed damage on his car.

After the accident, a passing driver saw the bicyclist lying on the road. 911 was called. The bicyclist was transported to UCI Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Garrett pleaded guilty to felony hit and run causing death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, 200 hours of community service, $14,000 restitution to Garrett's family, and three years of probation.
