Santa Monica Police Department records show that bicyclists and pedestrians reported almost 1,000 collisions between February 2006 and February 2011. Eight of the collisions were fatal, killing seven pedestrians and one bicyclist.
Most of the accidents occurred at intersections. The highest concentration of accidents was on Lincoln, Pico and Ocean. Many were also on San Vicente Blvd. and near Santa Monica College.
Over the next five years, Santa Monica will be implementing bike-friendly improvements, including increased signage and clear separation of pedestrian versus bike ways.
