A three-vehicle crash on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu on October 27th may have been the result of drunk driving.
The multi-vehicle accident happened at 8:10 a.m. on PCH at Rambla Pacifico Rd. 19-year-old Donald Sheffield and his passenger, 15-year-old Roman Jimenez, were eastbound on Pacific Coast Highway in a Ford Explorer. Sheffield lost control of his vehicle and veered into westbound lanes. Sheffield's Explorer struck a westbound vehicle, causing the Explorer to spin and strike a third vehicle, which was eastbound on PCH.
Jimenez was declared dead at the scene of the accident. Sheffield and the driver of the eastbound car were airlifted to Ronald Regan UCLA Medical Center. The driver of the eastbound car underwent surgery for abdominal injuries. The female driver of the westbound car was transported by ambulance to Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, where she was treated and released. Her son, who was also in the car, was not injured.
After the accident, police detained Sheffield on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter. According to police, Sheffield and Jimenez had attended a party in Malibu Friday night and were headed home at the time of the accident. Police are awaiting Sheffield's blood alcohol test results, which could take four to six weeks. Sheffield told officers he had "tires issues" before he lost control of the vehicle.
