On January 1st, 2012, the California car seat law will change.
Under current law, all children under six and all children weighing less than 60 pounds must ride in a booster seat in the back seat. Under the new law, effective January 1, 2012, all children under eight or shorter than 4 feet 9 inches must ride in a booster seat in the back seat.
A ticket for failing to comply with the new law will result in a $475 fine to the parent/guardian. If the parent or guardian is not present, the driver will receive the citation.
A child's risk of injury is 33% higher if they are sitting in the front seat as opposed to the back seat, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
