A Lakewood man was killed today after he lost control of his car while speeding and caused a multi-vehicle collision.
The accident happened at about 11:55 a.m. at the intersection of Clark Ave. and East Willow St. in Long Beach. The victim, 23-years-old, was eastbound on Willow St. According to Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman Lisa Massacani, the driver was speeding and struck the median at Clark Ave. His vehicle, a Dodge Neon, was launched airborne and struck three other vehicles when it came down.
The 54-year-old driver of a Ford Ranger and the 64-year-old driver of a Chevrolet El Camino were injured and transported by ambulance to local hospitals. A third man, the driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe, was not hurt.
According to firefighter Steve Yamamoto, the jaws of life had to be used to extricate the 23-year-old from his crumpled wreckage. The driver was driving at an excessive speed and not wearing a seatbelt, according to Massacani.
