A multi-vehicle crash involving a big rig resulted in the closure of the 10 freeway Tuesday night in Montclair.
The accident occurred around 11:15 p.m. on the westbound I-10 near the Monte Vista exit. According to the CHP, a Mercedes driver lost control of his vehicle and struck a semi. The driver of the big rig then swerved left and collided with a Nissan. The big rig and the Nissan then slammed into the center divider.
The big rig caught fire and a diesel tank from the semi landed in the eastbound lanes of travel and ruptured into flames.
The big rig driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to County USC Medical Center. Another driver had to be airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital after emergency responders extricated the driver with the jaws of life. Details regarding the drivers' injuries were not immediately available.
Cranes were used to upright the semi truck after the accident. It was then towed from the scene on a flat bed truck. Hazmat personnel were called in to clean-up the big rig's fuel spill.
