A two-vehicle crash in North Hills on Wednesday left one person dead.
The accident happened at 6:10 a.m. at the intersection of Plummer St. and Haskell Ave., in the 15800 block of Plummer St. The intersection is controlled by a traffic signal.
A flatbed truck carrying heavy construciton equipment (a water tender and a backhoe) was southbound on Haskell Ave. A Ford Taurus was westbound on Plummer St. One of the vehicles ran a red light and the vehicles collided.
The force of the impact caused the truck to jackknife. The Taurus station wagon was pushed through a retaining wall and up onto the lawn of a home at the corner of the intersection.
According to Detective Bill Bustos of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division, the Caterpillar truck weighed at least 80,000 pounds.
The driver of the Taurus, a man in his late 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the truck was not injured.
The LAPD is still investigating the cause of the crash. It is unknown at this time whether there were any witnesses.
